The future of cloud computing is ever shifting, but there are definitely times when you can get a glimpse of it, especially when it comes to how it affects IT, by looking at the signs.

 

Multi-Cloud

One way that the future will affect IT and the cloud, is through the mega-trend of multi-cloud options. According to some sources, almost one-third of all organizations throughout the world have more than four cloud vendors. This is looking like a major trend. And, of course, it can go without saying that a trend like this is going to disproportionately affect the world of IT, and for that matter, the Asian markets as well, considering how much they are predicted to grow in the coming years in this area.

The market is predicted to grow overall by at least 18%, and a lot of this will be in places like Asia. The truth is that there are just a lot of different possibilities for what you’re going to need at any one point in terms of IT, so having multiple clouds is going to be important. Here are examples of how this often works:

  • Interdepartmental Needs-If there are other departments in your organization that needs resources such as for data analytics, customer management, or modeling tools, each department can connect to a different cloud service, or to multiple cloud services simultaneously, in order to get what they need under a multi-cloud system.
  • Rising Above the Single Cloud Model-Organizations that try using only a single cloud model tend to handicap themselves because you can only handle everything in a one-dimensional way. Large organizations will often be in many different pieces, and trying to get everything you need from one cloud service is often going to prove significantly difficult.
  • Additional Options for Adaptation-What always happens with businesses that are large enough is that they will eventually demand extra options in order to handle different types of applications, operating systems, computer setups, and work weeks. And of course, these will be ever shifting as technology and the world changes so multiple cloud services will be needed in order to accommodate that, generally.

What this all means in practice, is that you’re going to have to have flexibility in the future since the complexity of systems is only going to increase. Essentially, adaptation requires more interconnectedness, and multi-cloud systems can do this like a charm. Any company that’s large enough will want flexibility eventually, especially due to their multiple departments and other subdivisions. Having agreements with multiple vendors will also mean that the multi-cloud approach will start looking ideal.

 

Machine Learning

Another trend that is quickly looking like it will be a major part of the future of cloud computing is specifically related to machine learning. Recent articles, for example, have shown that Google is starting to shift its IT efforts away from pure analytics to focus on what people call “deep learning.” The ability of computers to pick up on deep patterns extant within various different systems, including human behavior.

The goal is to simplify deep learning techniques so that many companies and users can utilize them. At this point, anyone within a company that wants to use deep learning for a near infinite amount of potential applications will be able to do so without having to get into the heavy technical aspects of deep machine learning. They can just connect to it directly through the cloud, essentially.

The problem with a lot of IT approaches to data these days is that it takes so long to collect all of the data and get it in a form that can be used by engineers looking to develop the data for whatever applications. These techniques are going to have a huge impact on the IT options of the future. Articles online are already talking about how a single picture of a person can be mined for a huge amount of data about them using cloud services to make use of machine learning such as being able to make a guess at their gender, whether their male or female and other information about them.

It’s even becoming possible to tell where they are by looking at details in the background. This has applications relevant in IT subcategories such as for customer interactions and what is often known as “creepy A.I,” where essentially, they can get information on customers instantly and know how to market to them or even give advice to customer service people on their upcoming interactions.

Potential applications are pretty exciting as the future unfolds, and they include:

  • Healthcare and Scanning-Normal Xrays and MRIs will make it so that systems connected to deep learning cloud computing can connect information in a person’s scan with similar pictures from thousands and hundreds of thousands of other scans. The machine learning could then give doctors an unprecedented amount of forewarning and understanding of the image. This could lead to detecting Alzheimer’s and other diseases far sooner than what is currently possible.
  • Civil Engineering-Speculatively, deep learning could allow companies working with civil engineers to anticipate things like accidents and traffic to a degree that could allow significantly reducing these issues. After all, accidents and traffic likely have patterns that are simply not known about currently due to processing limitations.
  • Other Possibilities in Marketing and Beyond-The potential for this technology in IT systems is limitless, analyzing customer data at a whole new level and being able to anticipate how you’re inventory needs are going to go potentially before customers understand it themselves, for example.

 

Self-Automating and Reduced Operation for Systems

When systems become “smart” enough, they often begin to be able to essentially run themselves. This is one thing that cloud computing specialists are predicting as being a major trend in the future. The prediction is that many of the parts of IT development such as creating infrastructure and programming APIs will end up being automated. Even the scripting and initial design could be automated using machine learning.

This will obviously not eliminate the need for humans to be behind the system at some point, but it may reduce how many people are working on these things, which can really help businesses keep their operating costs down, but it will require companies to think about this in order to not get outcompeted by other competitors within the system that are having the same thoughts.

Some are even talking about how underlying architectures may end up not needing servers as much anymore either. In other words, cloud computing using this kind of machine learning system will radically change the whole game. Many things will be able to be outsourced instead of having everything being in-house like some large companies do these days.

Individual developers will also be able to tap into it more than they ever have before as well, leading to a lot of possibilities for outsourcing work that may have taken entire teams to do before to just a few individuals per department and per project. It’s a shifting world to be sure.
